Romanian CUI & VAT Checker

Check a Romanian cod unic de înregistrare (CUI) or RO VAT code and confirm that it is registered for VAT — with the registered company name and address.

What is a Romanian CUI?

The CUI (cod unic de înregistrare) is the tax identification number of a Romanian business registered in the trade register: 2 to 10 digits, the last of which is by convention a check digit — for example 1590082 for OMV Petrom. Once the business is registered for VAT, RO in front of the same digits is its VAT code (RO1590082).

Romanian CUI and VAT code format

RO for VAT-registered businesses, then 2 to 10 digits ending in a check digit.

RO VAT prefix
(VAT-registered only)
159008 1 to 9 digits
2 Check digit

Example: RO1590082 (OMV PETROM SA, Bucharest). Its imprint prints the CUI the old way, as “R 159 0082”.

  • 2–10 digits: No fixed length and no letters other than the RO prefix. Remove spaces and a legacy “R” before checking.
  • Check digit: By convention the last digit is a check digit. Software commonly uses the weighting key 7-5-3-2-1-7-5-3-2, but Romania has not published the formula officially.
  • Not a CUI: A 13-digit personal CNP or a trade register number such as J1997008302407 is a different identifier. The common sample RO1234567890 fails the check digit.
  • Name and address: Romania releases the registered name and address for VAT-registered businesses, so a valid result shows who the number belongs to.

How to check a Romanian CUI

  1. 1 Find the CUI or VAT code on the company’s invoice, website or imprint (“Cod fiscal” or “CUI”).
  2. 2 Enter it above, with or without RO. The checker confirms whether the number is registered for VAT.
  3. 3 Compare the returned name and address with your supplier or customer. A not-valid result can mean the business is not VAT-registered.
  4. 4 Want to run the official checks yourself? Our EU VAT verification guide walks through them step by step.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check a Romanian CUI or VAT number? (Verificare CUI firmă)

Enter it in the checker on this page, with or without RO: it confirms whether the number is registered for VAT and shows the registered company name and address. For the official routes, see our EU VAT verification guide.

What is the difference between CUI and CIF?

CIF (cod de identificare fiscală) is the umbrella term for a Romanian tax ID. For a business in the trade register, its CIF is its CUI (cod unic de înregistrare); for bodies outside the register ANAF assigns a cod de înregistrare fiscală, and private individuals generally use their personal numeric code (CNP) — self-employed people receive a tax registration code, and people without a CNP a NIF.

What does the RO prefix mean?

It marks a VAT registration code: under article 318 of the Fiscal Code, the code for VAT purposes carries the prefix RO. A company not registered for VAT uses its CUI without RO. For a Romanian company, the VAT code is RO followed by the same digits as its CUI.

How many digits does a Romanian CUI have?

Between 2 and 10 digits — there is no fixed length. OMV Petrom’s CUI, 1590082, has 7.

Why does VIES say a Romanian number is invalid?

VIES only confirms numbers registered for VAT. A company or public body that is not VAT-registered has a genuine CUI but shows as invalid. Romania’s VIES connection is also usually unavailable at weekends, from Saturday 21:50 to Sunday 21:50.

Is the trade register number (J…) the same as the CUI?

No. The trade register number — for example J1997008302407 for OMV Petrom — identifies the company’s entry in the trade register. The CUI (1590082) is its tax identification number.
