Angola NIF Format Checker
Check that an Angolan Número de Identificação Fiscal has the right structure: 10 digits for a company, or a citizen’s 14-character BI number.
What is an Angolan NIF?
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Angola’s only tax identification number, assigned exclusively by the Administração Geral Tributária (AGT) to individuals and companies. A citizen’s NIF is their Bilhete de Identidade number; companies and foreign individuals get a sequential AGT number — most company NIFs have 10 digits, such as 5410003691 for Banco de Fomento Angola.
Angolan company NIF format
Ten digits, as most company NIFs appear in AGT documents (AGT publishes no format).
(company NIFs)
Example: 5410003691 (Banco de Fomento Angola, S.A., as printed on its own website).
- Citizens: A citizen’s NIF is their BI number: 14 characters, 9 digits + 2 letters + 3 digits. Never enter another person’s.
- No check digit: AGT publishes no check-digit rule, so a NIF’s structure can be checked but not its arithmetic.
- Not a NIF: A 9-digit number doesn’t match the Angolan NIF shapes seen in AGT documents (Portuguese NIFs have 9 digits). A commercial register number (e.g. 2006-575) is not a tax ID.
- Format check only: This checker does not query AGT, so it cannot tell whether a NIF is active, suspended or ceased.
How to check an Angolan NIF
- 1 Find the NIF on the supplier’s invoice, website or contract — invoices to a business must show both parties’ NIFs.
- 2 Enter it above. The checker confirms that it has a company or citizen NIF structure.
- 3 A valid format does not mean the NIF is active: AGT suspends NIFs, and a suspended NIF cannot be used on invoices.
- 4 To confirm a NIF’s status, see how to verify an Angolan NIF in our guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check an Angolan NIF? (Como consultar um NIF?)
Enter it in the checker on this page to confirm its structure: a 10-digit company NIF or a 14-character citizen NIF. Angolan law also requires public and private entities to ask their customers for proof of their NIF and to check its status on AGT’s digital platform; our Angola tax ID guide explains the official lookup.
How many digits does an Angolan NIF have?
AGT does not publish a format. Most company NIFs in AGT’s own documents have 10 digits starting with 5 — Banco de Fomento Angola, for example, prints 5410003691 on its website. A citizen’s NIF is their 14-character Bilhete de Identidade number: 9 digits, 2 letters and 3 digits.
Is my Bilhete de Identidade number my NIF?
Yes, for Angolan citizens: by law the NIF of a national is their Bilhete de Identidade (BI) number. Foreign individuals and companies receive a sequential number assigned by AGT instead.
Does Angola have a separate VAT (IVA) number?
No. The NIF is the only tax identifier, and a taxpayer’s IVA regime is recorded against its NIF. Angolan NIFs have no AO prefix.
Can a NIF have a valid format but be suspended?
Yes. AGT can suspend a NIF: it announced that from 1 December 2025 it would suspend the NIFs of companies that had filed no tax return for more than 12 months. A suspended or ceased NIF cannot be mentioned or used for any purpose, including on invoices. A format check cannot tell you a NIF’s status.
Is a foreign resident’s NIF their residence card number?
Under Decreto Presidencial 245/21, foreign citizens, resident or not, receive a sequential number assigned by AGT. AGT’s own website still describes a foreign resident’s NIF as their residence card number, so confirm the number on the AGT record.
