Indian GSTIN Checker
Check an Indian GST Identification Number (GSTIN) for correct format and check character, and confirm it in the GST registry — with the legal name, address and status.
What is a GSTIN?
A GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is the 15-character number a business receives for each Indian State where it registers for GST: a 2-digit State code, the business’s 10-character PAN, an entity code and a check character — for example 27AAACU2414K1ZF for Axis Bank Limited in Maharashtra.
GSTIN format

Example: 27AAACU2414K1ZF (Axis Bank Limited, Maharashtra registration).
- 15 characters: Capital letters and digits, no spaces. The PAN in positions 3–12 is shared by all of a business’s GSTINs.
- Check character: The rules require one checksum character; no official source publishes the formula. The widely used mod-36 method matches every live GSTIN we tested.
- Sole traders: A sole proprietor’s GSTIN contains their personal PAN, so treat it with care.
- Name and status: A valid result shows the legal name, address and registration status from the GST registry.
How to verify a GSTIN
- 1 Find the GSTIN on the supplier’s tax invoice or website.
- 2 Enter it above. The checker validates the format and check character, then confirms the registration.
- 3 Compare the returned legal name, address and status with your supplier.
- 4 Want to run the official check yourself? Our GSTIN verification guide walks through the GST portal step by step.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if a GST number is valid?
Enter the GSTIN in the checker on this page: it validates the format and the 15th check character, then confirms the registration and shows the legal name, address and status. For the GST portal’s own Search Taxpayer route, see our GSTIN verification guide.
What is the GSTIN format?
15 characters: a 2-digit State code, the 10-character PAN of the business, a 2-character entity code and a check character — for example 27AAACU2414K1ZF for Axis Bank in Maharashtra. In practice the 14th character is Z.
What do the first two digits of a GSTIN mean?
They are the State or Union Territory of registration — for example 27 Maharashtra, 29 Karnataka, 07 Delhi and 37 Andhra Pradesh. Codes 96 and 99 are used for other countries, and 97 for other territory.
Why does one company have many GSTINs?
GST registration is PAN-based and State-specific: a business needs a separate GSTIN in each State or Union Territory where it is liable to register (broadly, each State it supplies from), and can take more than one in the same State. Axis Bank’s own list shows GSTINs in more than 30 States and Union Territories, all built on the same PAN.
Can a GSTIN be valid in format but cancelled?
Yes. A tax officer can cancel a registration — including from an earlier date — or suspend it while cancellation is pending. A well-formed GSTIN is therefore not proof of an active registration.
Do I need the buyer’s GSTIN on the invoice?
Yes, if the buyer is registered. A tax invoice must show the supplier’s GSTIN and, where the recipient is registered, the recipient’s GSTIN or UIN.
