Brazilian CNPJ Checker
Check a Brazilian Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Jurídica (CNPJ) for correct format and check digits, and see whether it is registered.
What is a CNPJ?
The CNPJ (Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Jurídica) is the 14-position national registration number the Receita Federal gives every Brazilian company and each of its establishments, written XX.XXX.XXX/XXXX-XX — for example 33.000.167/0001-01 for Petrobras. Since July 2026 new CNPJs can also contain letters.
Brazilian CNPJ format
An 8-position root, a 4-position establishment number and 2 numeric check digits.
— the company
(0001 = head office at creation)
(mod 11)
Example: 33.000.167/0001-01 (Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. — Petrobras).
- 14 positions: Dots, slash and hyphen are optional. All of a company’s establishments share the same 8-digit root.
- Check digits: Mod 11 with weights 2–9, as published by the Receita Federal. A mistyped digit almost always fails it.
- Alphanumeric: New CNPJs issued since July 2026 may contain letters in the first 12 positions. This checker accepts digits only for now.
- Not a status check: The checker confirms a CNPJ is registered, not whether it is ativa, suspensa, inapta or baixada.
How to check a CNPJ
- 1 Find the CNPJ on the supplier’s nota fiscal, contract or website.
- 2 Enter it above, with or without punctuation. The checker validates the format and check digits and confirms the CNPJ is registered.
- 3 To check the registration status (situação cadastral), follow our CNPJ verification guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the CNPJ structured?
14 positions, written XX.XXX.XXX/XXXX-XX: an 8-position root that identifies the company, a 4-position establishment number, and 2 numeric check digits — for example 33.000.167/0001-01 for Petrobras.
What is the alphanumeric CNPJ?
Since July 2026 the Receita Federal can issue CNPJs whose first 12 positions contain letters as well as digits; the last two remain numeric check digits. It applies only to new registrations and new branches — existing CNPJs never change. Our checker does not yet accept alphanumeric CNPJs.
How are the CNPJ check digits calculated?
Each character gets a value (its ASCII code minus 48, so digits keep their value and A is 17), the values are weighted 2 to 9 from right to left, restarting after the eighth, and summed. A remainder of 0 or 1 gives check digit 0; otherwise it is 11 minus the remainder. The second digit repeats this including the first.
Does /0001 always mean the head office?
Usually. The head office (matriz) gets establishment number 0001 when the CNPJ is created, but a branch can later become the head office, so 0001 is not a guarantee.
What are the CNPJ registration statuses?
The Receita Federal uses five: ativa, suspensa, inapta, baixada and nula. Our checker confirms that a CNPJ exists but does not show its status — to check it, see our CNPJ verification guide.
Can a company with an inapta CNPJ issue invoices?
Not electronic ones. Companies whose CNPJ is suspended or inapta cannot issue electronic tax documents, and invoices from inapta or closed (baixada) companies cannot support federal tax deductions or credits.
