Hong Kong BRN Checker

Check a Hong Kong Business Registration Number and, for Hong Kong-incorporated companies, see the registered name and address from company records.

What is a Hong Kong BRN?

A Business Registration Number (BRN) is the 8-digit number the Inland Revenue Department gives every business registered in Hong Kong, shown at the start of its Business Registration Certificate number. Since 2023 it also serves as the Unique Business Identifier (UBI) for companies — for example 21318567 for CLP Holdings Limited.

Hong Kong BR certificate number

The BRN is the first 8 digits; the rest identifies the branch and the certificate.

Example: 21318567 (CLP Holdings Limited, from the Companies Registry’s CR No.–BRN mapping).

  • 8 digits: Enter the 8-digit BRN, or paste the full certificate number — the checker uses the first 8 digits.
  • Local companies: Hong Kong-incorporated companies are confirmed with their registered name, address and company type.
  • Others: Non-Hong Kong companies, sole proprietors and partnerships get a format check only.
  • Not a BRN: A Company Registration Number (up to 7 digits) is a different identifier.

How to check a Hong Kong BRN

  1. 1 Find the BRN on the company’s Business Registration Certificate, invoice or contract.
  2. 2 Enter the 8 digits above, or the full certificate number.
  3. 3 For a local company, compare the returned name and address with the business you are dealing with.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the BRN and the BR certificate number?

The Business Registration Number (BRN) is the first 8 digits of the certificate number printed on a Business Registration Certificate. The next 3 digits are the branch number (000 for the main business); the rest identifies the individual certificate and is not part of the BRN.

What is the Unique Business Identifier (UBI)?

Since 27 December 2023 the BRN has served as the Unique Business Identifier (UBI) for companies, and companies incorporated since then show it on their certificate of incorporation. Older companies with no BRN were given a Companies Registry “dummy BRN” starting with C or F.

Is the BRN the same as the Company Registration Number?

No. The old Company Registration Number (CR No.) from the Companies Registry has up to 7 digits. The BRN is the 8-digit number from the Inland Revenue Department’s Business Registration Office, now used as the UBI (companies without a BRN use a C- or F-prefixed dummy BRN).

Does Hong Kong have VAT or GST?

No. Hong Kong has no VAT or GST, so the BRN is the main business identifier used on invoices and contracts.

How do I look up a Hong Kong business?

The Inland Revenue Department’s Business Registration Office provides business register extracts for a fee, and the Companies Registry’s e-Search shows company particulars. Our checker confirms Hong Kong-incorporated companies from company records.

Does the BRN have a check digit?

The Inland Revenue Department has not published a check-digit rule for the BRN. Our checker confirms the 8-digit format and, for local companies, the record.
