What is a Chinese Unified Social Credit Code?
The Unified Social Credit Code (统一社会信用代码, USCI) is the 18-character identifier issued to Chinese companies and organisations since October 2015, and now held by virtually all of them, defined by national standard GB 32100-2015. It doubles as the organisation’s tax identification number — for example 91100000100003962T for Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.

- 18 characters: Digits and capital letters, never I, O, S, V or Z. Two check characters are built in, both defined in national standards.
- Final check: Weights 3^(i−1) mod 31 on the first 17 characters, as set out in GB 32100-2015. The often-used sample 91110000100010794B fails it.
- Format check only: This checker confirms length and characters only. It does not yet test the check characters or look the code up in a register.
- Not a USCI: An old 15-digit registration number or an 18-digit personal ID number is a different identifier.
How to check a Chinese USCI
- 1 Find the 18-character code on the company’s business licence (营业执照), contract or fapiao.
- 2 Enter it above. The checker confirms it has the right length and characters.
- 3 To confirm the company exists and is active, search the code in the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System (GSXT).

How do I check a Chinese company’s USCI?
The checker on this page confirms the code has the right length and characters. To confirm a company exists and is active: for codes starting with 9 (entities registered by market regulators), check the official National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System (GSXT).
Is the USCI the Chinese tax number?
Yes. Organisations that hold a USCI use it as their taxpayer identification number (State Taxation Administration Announcement 2015 No. 66, effective 1 October 2015).
What do the 18 characters mean?
One character for the registration authority, one for the entity type, a 6-digit administrative division code of the registering office, a 9-character organization code with its own check digit, and a final check character. The letters I, O, S, V and Z are never used.
What does “91” at the start mean?
9 means the code was issued by a market regulation authority, and 1 means an enterprise. Codes starting 92 belong to individual businesses and 93 to farmers’ cooperatives.
A supplier gave me a 15-digit number. Is it valid?
It is an old pre-2015 registration or tax number. Old certificates were phased out by the end of 2017, with a final deadline at the end of 2020, so ask for the 18-character USCI shown on the current business licence.
Must the buyer’s USCI appear on a fapiao?
Yes. Since 1 July 2017, an enterprise buyer must give its taxpayer identification number or USCI for a general VAT fapiao; otherwise the invoice cannot be used as a tax voucher.
