Jamaica TRN Format Checker
Check that a Jamaican Taxpayer Registration Number has the right structure: nine digits, with or without hyphens.
What is a Jamaican TRN?
A TRN (Taxpayer Registration Number) is the nine-digit number Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) assigns to each individual, business and organisation that deals with it, usually written XXX-XXX-XXX. One TRN covers every tax, including GCT, and it is kept for life. Currently, individual TRNs start with 1 and organisation TRNs with 0.
Jamaican TRN format
Nine digits, usually written in three groups.
(currently 0 = organisation, 1 = individual)
digits
Example: 099-560-117, a business TRN shown in screenshots of TAJ’s online search in a 2016 Ministry of Finance circular.
- Hyphens: Formatting only. Enter the TRN with or without them.
- Branch suffix: A 4-digit suffix such as -0001 identifies a branch, not a different taxpayer.
- No published check digit: TAJ says the digits are generated by a system with its own rules, but it doesn’t publish them.
- Format check only: This checker confirms that the number has nine digits. It does not query TAJ, so it cannot confirm that a TRN was issued or who holds it.
How to check a Jamaican TRN
- 1 Find the TRN on the supplier’s invoice, receipt or GCT Registration Certificate.
- 2 Enter it above, with or without hyphens. A branch suffix such as -0001 is removed before the check.
- 3 If the checker reports a format error, ask the supplier to confirm the number.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many digits is a TRN?
Nine. TAJ’s online search takes it as XXX-XXX-XXX (for example 099-560-117) and lists it as 099560117, so the hyphens are only formatting.
Does a company TRN start with 0?
Currently, yes: TAJ says the first digit is 1 for individuals and 0 for organisations, and expects this to stay so for the foreseeable future. It describes this as current practice, not a fixed rule.
What does -0001 after a TRN mean?
It is a branch number. TAJ lists a business’s branches as its 9-digit TRN followed by a 4-digit suffix, such as 099560117-0001. This checker removes the suffix and checks the TRN.
Is the GCT number the same as the TRN?
TAJ uses the TRN to identify a taxpayer for every tax, including General Consumption Tax (GCT). A business needs a TRN before it can register for GCT, and the GCT Registration Certificate shows its TRN.
Is my TRN my driver’s licence number?
Yes. The TRN replaced the driver’s licence number in November 2001, as well as older numbers such as the Business Enterprise Number (BENO) and the Income Tax Reference Number. An individual’s TRN is personal data, so don’t share or look up anyone else’s.
Is the TRN the same as a Companies Office registration number?
No. The Companies Office of Jamaica registers the company; its TRN is issued by TAJ, usually as part of the same registration process. TAJ asks for the Certificate of Incorporation and each director’s TRN when a company applies.
