What is a Costa Rican cédula jurídica?
The cédula jurídica is the 10-character number the Registro Nacional gives a legal person in Costa Rica, and the ID Hacienda uses for its taxes — for example 3-101-009758 for DHL Costa Rica S.A. It is a type digit, a 3-digit class and a 6-digit sequence. Costa Rica has no separate VAT number.

- Other IDs: Cédula física 9 digits; DIMEX 11 or 12; NITE 10 (3-120 or 3-130). Hyphens are optional.
- Status: A found ID shows its Hacienda status, such as Inscrito, Inscrito de Oficio, No inscrito or Persona jurídica inactiva. A number can be in the register without being registered for tax, so read the status, not just the result.
- Letters coming: New cédulas jurídicas may contain letters (e.g. 3-101-A00001). This checker shows them as an invalid format for now, which does not mean the number is not genuine.
- Personal IDs: A cédula física or DIMEX is personal data, so this page uses company examples only.
How to check a Costa Rican cédula jurídica
- 1 Get the supplier’s cédula jurídica from its invoice, or ask the supplier for it.
- 2 Enter it above, with or without hyphens. The checker looks it up in Hacienda’s taxpayer register.
- 3 Check the status: Inscrito or Inscrito de Oficio means the number is registered with Hacienda. The full registered name is shown after you sign up.

What does 3-101 mean in a cédula jurídica?
The first digit is the type: 3 for companies and other legal persons, 2 for the branches of government, 4 for autonomous institutions and 5 for undivided estates. The next three digits are the class — 101 sociedad anónima, 102 sociedad de responsabilidad limitada, 002 asociación, 006 fundación.
Will cédulas jurídicas contain letters?
Yes. When the six-digit sequence runs out, the Registro Nacional will issue sequences with letters of the same length, such as 3-101-A00001; it planned the change for the start of the fourth quarter of 2026. Existing numbers do not change.
Does Costa Rica have a separate tax ID or VAT number?
No. Hacienda registers taxpayers under their existing identification: the cédula física for citizens, the cédula jurídica for legal persons, the DIMEX for resident foreigners, or a NITE it assigns itself.
What is a NITE?
A Número de Identificación Tributario Especial that Hacienda’s tax directorate assigns to foreign individuals without a DIMEX (3-120-XXXXXX) and to entities without legal personality (3-130-XXXXXX). It looks like a cédula jurídica but is not issued by the Registro Nacional.
How many digits does each Costa Rican ID have?
A cédula física has 9 digits, a cédula jurídica and a NITE 10 characters, and a DIMEX 11 or 12 digits.
Does the cédula jurídica have a check digit?
No. The last six characters are a sequential number assigned by the Registro Nacional, so only a register can confirm a cédula jurídica.
