Cyprus VAT Number Checker

Check a Cyprus Αριθμός Εγγραφής ΦΠΑ for correct format and confirm in real time via the EU VIES system that it is valid — with the registered name and address.

What is a Cyprus VAT number?

A Cyprus VAT number (Αριθμός Εγγραφής ΦΠΑ) is the number the Tax Department gives a business registered for VAT: CY followed by 8 digits and a check letter — for example CY10200585J for eToro (Europe) Ltd. It is often, but not always, the same as the business’s Tax Identification Code (TIC), and it is never the HE company number.

Cyprus VAT number format

CY, eight digits and a Latin check letter.

CY Country code
10200585 Eight digits
J Check letter
(Latin A–Z)

Example: CY10200585J (eToro (Europe) Ltd, Limassol; company number HE200585).

  • 11 characters: CY + 8 digits + 1 letter. Use a Latin capital letter — a Greek letter that looks the same will not match.
  • Check letter: The Tax Department has not published how the letter is calculated. The sample CY12345678Z is not a valid number.
  • Not a VAT number: An HE company number, or an income-tax TIC that differs from the VAT number, will not pass in VIES.
  • Name and address: Cyprus releases the registered name and address through VIES — the address may appear in Greek.

How to check a Cyprus VAT number

  1. 1 Find the VAT number on the company’s invoice or website — not the HE registration number next to it.
  2. 2 Enter it above, with or without CY. The checker confirms the number via VIES.
  3. 3 Compare the returned name and address with your supplier or customer.
  4. 4 Want to run the official checks yourself? Our EU VAT verification guide walks through them step by step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the format of a Cyprus VAT number?

CY followed by 8 digits and one capital Latin letter — for example CY10200585J (eToro (Europe) Ltd). Without the prefix it is 9 characters.

How do I check a Cyprus VAT number?

Enter it in the checker on this page, with or without CY: it confirms the number via the EU VIES system and shows the registered name and address. For the official route, see our EU VAT verification guide.

Is the Cyprus VAT number the same as the TIC?

Not always. For many businesses the VAT number is CY plus the Tax Identification Code (TIC), but the Tax Department confirms that some taxpayers hold one number for VAT and a different one for income tax — so a TIC can fail in VIES.

What is an HE number, and can I use it as a VAT number?

HE is the prefix of a company’s registration number with the Registrar of Companies — eToro (Europe) Ltd is HE200585. It is not a tax number, and VIES does not accept it.

Why do new Cyprus tax numbers start with 6?

Since March 2023 the Tax Department issues new TICs as random numbers beginning with 6. Older numbers keep their original format and cannot be switched.

Why is a Cyprus VAT number invalid in VIES?

Common causes are entering the income-tax TIC or the HE number instead of the VAT number, typing the final letter in Greek script, or a business that is not (or no longer) registered for VAT.
