What is a Bulgarian VAT number?
A Bulgarian VAT number (идентификационен номер по ДДС) is BG followed by 9 or 10 digits. For a company it is BG plus its 9-digit unified identification code (ЕИК) — for example BG831902088 for Sopharma AD. It is issued by the National Revenue Agency when the business registers for VAT.

- 9 or 10 digits: BG + 9 digits for companies, other entities, sole traders and BULSTAT-registered freelancers; BG + 10 digits for other individuals.
- Not a VAT number: A 13-digit ЕИК of a branch is never a VAT number, even though a pure format check may accept 13 digits.
- Format check only: This checker validates the format. It does not yet look the number up in VIES, so it cannot confirm VAT registration.
- Name and address: Bulgaria releases the registered name and address through VIES, where you can confirm who the number belongs to.

What is the Bulgarian VAT number format?

Is the ДДС номер the same as the ЕИК?
For a Bulgarian company, the VAT number is BG followed by its ЕИК — the 9-digit unified identification code from the Commercial Register or BULSTAT. The VAT number only exists once the company is registered for VAT.
What is a 13-digit ЕИК?
Branches of Bulgarian traders receive the parent’s 9-digit ЕИК plus four more digits. A 13-digit code identifies the branch; it is never a VAT number.
Do individuals’ VAT numbers still contain the ЕГН?
No longer. Since 1 January 2024, VAT numbers of individuals not entered in the Commercial or BULSTAT registers are no longer formed from their ЕГН or ЛНЧ; the National Revenue Agency issues a separate service number instead.
How do I check whether a Bulgarian VAT number is valid?

Does the ЕИК have a check digit?
Yes, the last digit is a check digit, but the formula is not set out in the BULSTAT or Commercial Register laws. Live company numbers pass the commonly used algorithm; the often-used sample BG123456789 fails it.
