Luxembourg VAT Number Checker

Check a Luxembourg numéro d’identification TVA for correct format and confirm in real time via the EU VIES system that it is valid — with the registered name and address.

What is a Luxembourg VAT number?

A Luxembourg VAT number (numéro d’identification TVA) is the number the Administration de l’enregistrement, des domaines et de la TVA (AED) gives a business when it registers for VAT: LU followed by 8 digits — for example LU24448288 for Amazon Payments Europe S.C.A. It is different from the RCS register number and the matricule.

Luxembourg VAT number format

LU and eight digits.

LU Country code
244482 Six digits
88 Two final digits
(mod-89 test)

Example: LU24448288 (Amazon Payments Europe S.C.A., RCS B153265). Another: LU26375245 (Amazon Europe Core S.à r.l.).

  • 10 characters: LU + 8 digits, no letters. Spaces in printed numbers (LU 24448288) are not part of it.
  • Check: No official algorithm is published that we could find. Validators commonly test that the last two digits equal the first six modulo 89; 244482 mod 89 is 88.
  • Not a VAT number: An RCS number (B153265), a 13-digit matricule or the placeholder LU12345678 will not pass.
  • Name and address: Luxembourg releases the registered name and address through VIES, so a valid result shows who the number belongs to.

How to check a Luxembourg VAT number

  1. 1 Find the VAT number on the company’s invoice or website — not the RCS number next to it.
  2. 2 Enter it above, with or without LU. The checker validates the format, then confirms the number via VIES.
  3. 3 Compare the returned name and address with your supplier or customer.
  4. 4 Want to run the official checks yourself? Our EU VAT verification guide walks through them step by step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the format of a Luxembourg VAT number?

LU followed by exactly 8 digits — for example LU24448288 (Amazon Payments Europe S.C.A.). It is often printed with a space after LU; remove spaces before checking.

How do I check a Luxembourg VAT number? (Vérifier un numéro de TVA)

Enter it in the checker on this page: it validates the format, then confirms the number via the EU VIES system and shows the registered name and address. For the official route, see our EU VAT verification guide.

Is the RCS number the same as the VAT number?

No. The RCS number is a company’s entry in the Luxembourg Trade and Companies Register — a section letter (B for commercial companies) and a number. The VAT number is LU + 8 digits from the AED. Amazon Payments Europe, for example, is RCS B153265 and VAT LU24448288.

What is the difference between the matricule and the VAT number?

The VAT number is used for VAT and intra-EU trade. The matricule is the national identification number used for direct tax and other dealings with the administration — 13 digits for individuals.

Does a Luxembourg VAT number have a check digit?

We found no official check-digit rule from the Luxembourg tax authority, and the European Commission does not disclose one. Validators commonly test that the last two digits equal the first six digits modulo 89, and the live numbers we checked pass it — but only a register check confirms the number is real. The often-quoted sample LU12345678 fails.

Must a Luxembourg invoice show the customer’s VAT number?

A full invoice must show the supplier’s VAT number. It must also show the customer’s VAT number when the customer pays the VAT under reverse charge, or when the sale is an exempt intra-EU supply of goods.
