Dutch VAT Number Checker
Check a Dutch btw-identificatienummer (btw-id) for correct format and confirm in real time via the EU VIES system that it is valid — with the registered name and address.
What is a Dutch btw-nummer?
The Dutch VAT number (btw-identificatienummer or btw-id) is the number the Belastingdienst gives VAT-registered businesses for invoices and EU trade: NL, nine digits, B and two digits — for example NL820646660B01. It is different from the omzetbelastingnummer used for VAT returns and from the 8-digit KVK number.
Dutch btw-id format
NL, nine digits, the letter B and a two-digit suffix — 14 characters.
(RSIN for companies)
suffix
Example: NL820646660B01 (ABN AMRO Bank N.V., as printed on its website). Format example: NL000099998B57.
- 14 characters: Always NL + 9 digits + B + 2 digits, in capitals and without spaces.
- Check: No official algorithm is published. In practice, company btw-ids pass the mod-11 “elfproef” on the nine digits, and post-2020 sole-trader btw-ids are reported to pass a mod-97 check — a validator has to accept either.
- Not a btw-id: A sole trader’s omzetbelastingnummer (which contains the BSN), a pre-2020 sole-trader number or an 8-digit KVK number will not pass. The widely used sample NL123456789B01 is not valid.
- Name and address: The Netherlands releases the registered name and address through VIES, so a valid result shows who the number belongs to.
How to check a Dutch btw-nummer
- 1 Find the btw-id on the company’s invoice or website — VAT invoices must show it.
- 2 Enter it above, with or without NL. The checker validates the format, then confirms the number via VIES.
- 3 Compare the returned name and address with your supplier or customer.
- 4 Want to run the official checks yourself? Our EU VAT verification guide walks through them step by step.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check a Dutch VAT number? (Hoe controleer ik een btw-nummer?)
Enter the btw-id in the checker on this page: it validates the format, then confirms the number via the EU VIES system and shows the registered name and address. There is no public Dutch register of btw-ids. For the official route, see our EU VAT verification guide.
What is the difference between the btw-id and the omzetbelastingnummer?
The btw-id (with NL) goes on invoices, your website and all dealings with customers and suppliers. The omzetbelastingnummer is only for contact with the Belastingdienst. For a sole trader (eenmanszaak) the omzetbelastingnummer contains the owner’s BSN, so it should not be shared.
What does a Dutch VAT number look like?
NL, nine digits, the letter B and two digits — 14 characters in total, for example NL820646660B01. For a BV, NV or foundation the nine digits are its RSIN; for a sole trader they are unrelated to the BSN.
Why is a Dutch btw-nummer invalid on VIES?
Usually because the omzetbelastingnummer was entered instead of the btw-id — common for sole traders — or because a pre-2020 sole-trader number was used. VIES is also offline for Dutch numbers every weekend, from Saturday 21:50 to Sunday 21:40.
Why did sole traders get a new VAT number in 2020?
To protect privacy: the old number contained the owner’s BSN. Since 1 January 2020 every eenmanszaak has a btw-id whose digits have nothing to do with the BSN; the old number lives on as the omzetbelastingnummer.
Is the KVK number the same as the btw-nummer?
No. The KVK number is an 8-digit number from the Chamber of Commerce proving registration in the Handelsregister. The btw-id comes from the Belastingdienst and shows the business is VAT-registered. Invoices normally show both.
