Norwegian Organisation Number Checker

Check a Norwegian organisasjonsnummer or MVA number and confirm the company in Enhetsregisteret — with its registered name, address and organisation form.

What is a Norwegian organisasjonsnummer?

The organisasjonsnummer (org.nr) is the 9-digit number Brønnøysundregistrene gives every company and business in Norway’s Central Coordinating Register (Enhetsregisteret) — for example 984 851 006 for DNB Bank ASA. Once the business is VAT-registered, the same number followed by MVA is its VAT number.

Norwegian organisation number format

Eight digits and a mod-11 check digit; MVA after it marks a VAT-registered business.

NO Prefix
(e-invoices, international)
98485100 Eight digits
6 Check digit
(mod 11)
MVA VAT-registered
suffix

Example: 984 851 006 (DNB Bank ASA). On invoices: 984851006MVA; in e-invoices: NO984851006MVA.

  • 9 digits: Often printed in groups of three (984 851 006). Spaces, NO and MVA are not part of the number itself.
  • Check digit: Weights 3-2-7-6-5-4-3-2, mod 11, as published by Brønnøysundregistrene. The sample NO123456789MVA fails it.
  • MVA suffix: Only VAT-registered businesses may write MVA after the number. Our checker confirms the company exists, not its VAT status.
  • Main entities: Each business location (underenhet) also has its own 9-digit number; the checker looks up main entities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Norwegian VAT number the same as the organisation number?

Yes. Once a business is in the VAT Register, its VAT number is its 9-digit organisation number, written with MVA after it on invoices — for example 984 851 006 MVA for DNB Bank ASA.

How do I check whether a Norwegian company is VAT-registered?

VAT registration is shown in the company’s entry in Enhetsregisteret at Brønnøysundregistrene, under “Særlige opplysninger”. A valid organisation number on its own does not mean the business is registered for VAT.

Can I check a Norwegian VAT number in VIES?

No. Norway is not in the EU, so the EU VIES system does not cover Norwegian numbers. Norwegian VAT status is published through Enhetsregisteret.

Do I write “NO” in front of a Norwegian VAT number?

Norwegian invoice rules require the organisation number followed by MVA (984851006MVA). The NO prefix is not in Norwegian law, but it is required in Peppol/EHF e-invoices (NO984851006MVA) and is common internationally.

How is the organisation number check digit calculated?

Multiply the first eight digits by 3, 2, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2, add the results and divide by 11. The check digit is 11 minus the remainder; a remainder of 0 gives 0, and a remainder of 1 means the number is not valid.

When must a business in Norway register for MVA?

Once its VAT-able sales exceed NOK 50,000 (excluding VAT) within 12 months — NOK 140,000 for charitable and non-profit organisations. It cannot charge VAT before it is registered.
