Swedish Organisationsnummer Checker
Check a Swedish organisationsnummer for correct format and check digit, and confirm the registered company name, type and status.
What is an organisationsnummer?
An organisationsnummer is the 10-digit identity number given to Swedish companies, associations and other legal entities when registered, written NNNNNN-NNNN — for example 556036-0793 for Saab AB. It never changes, and with SE in front and 01 at the end it forms the company’s Swedish VAT number.
Swedish organisationsnummer format
Ten digits: a group number, digits with a third digit of 2 or more, and a Luhn check digit.
(5 = aktiebolag)
(3rd digit ≥ 2)
(Luhn)
Example: 556036-0793 (Saab AB). The hyphen is optional when entering.
- 10 digits: Written NNNNNN-NNNN. Some systems store it with 16 in front (12 digits), but the official number is 10 digits.
- Third digit: Always 2 or higher — this is what separates it from a personnummer, whose third digit is 0 or 1.
- Check digit: Calculated with the Luhn (mod 10) method that Skatteverket publishes for personnummer; valid organisationsnummer pass the same check.
- Not an org number: A personnummer (sole traders) or a 14-character VAT number (SE…01) is a different identifier.
How to check an organisationsnummer
- 1 Find the organisationsnummer on the company’s invoice, website or annual report.
- 2 Enter it above, with or without the hyphen. The checker validates the format and check digit, then confirms the company in the official register.
- 3 Compare the returned company name, type and status with the business you are dealing with.
- 4 For VAT, check the company’s VAT number too — our Sweden VAT guide explains how the two numbers relate.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an organisationsnummer?
It is the 10-digit identity number Swedish companies, associations and other legal persons receive when they are registered. It is the company equivalent of the personnummer, and it never changes and is never reused.
What does an organisationsnummer look like?
Ten digits, written NNNNNN-NNNN — for example Saab AB’s 556036-0793 or AB Volvo’s 556012-5790. The last digit is a check digit.
How can you tell an organisationsnummer from a personnummer?
The third digit of an organisationsnummer is always 2 or higher. In a personnummer, digits 3–4 are the birth month (01–12), so the third digit is 0 or 1.
What does the first digit mean?
It is the group number and hints at the type of entity: 5 for aktiebolag, 9 for trading and limited partnerships, 7 or 8 for economic and housing associations, 3 for foreign companies, and numbers starting with 20 for state agencies. Bolagsverket notes this is not certain — the legal form is recorded separately.
Does an enskild firma have an organisationsnummer?
No. A sole trader uses their personnummer as the business’s identity number, including on invoices.
Is the organisationsnummer the same as the VAT number?
No. The Swedish VAT number is SE, the 10-digit organisationsnummer and 01 — for example SE556036079301 — and a business only has one once it is VAT-registered. Check a Swedish VAT number.
