Swedish VAT Number Checker
Check a Swedish momsregistreringsnummer for correct format and confirm in real time via the EU VIES system that it is valid — with the registered name and address.
What is a Swedish VAT number?
A Swedish VAT number (momsregistreringsnummer) is SE followed by 12 digits: the business’s 10-digit organisationsnummer — or a sole trader’s personnummer — plus 01. For example, SE556036079301 is Saab AB’s VAT number. Skatteverket issues it when a business registers for VAT.
Swedish VAT number format
SE, the 10-digit organisationsnummer or personnummer, and 01.
(or personnummer)
Example: SE556036079301 (Saab AB). Format example from Skatteverket: SE999999999901.
- 14 characters: SE + 12 digits, no hyphen. The last two digits are always 01 — dropping them is the most common error.
- Check digit: The 10th digit of the base number is a check digit. Skatteverket publishes the Luhn method for personnummer, and organisationsnummer consistently pass the same check.
- Only after registration: A business invoices with its organisationsnummer or personnummer until it is VAT-registered; only then does it have a VAT number.
- Name and address: Sweden releases the registered name and address through VIES, so a valid result shows who the number belongs to.
How to check a Swedish VAT number
- 1 Find the VAT number on the company’s invoice — or build it from the organisationsnummer as SE + 10 digits + 01.
- 2 Enter it above. The checker validates the format, then confirms the number via VIES.
- 3 Compare the returned name and address with the business you are dealing with.
- 4 Want to run the official checks yourself? Our EU VAT verification guide walks through them step by step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Swedish VAT number the same as the organisationsnummer?
No. The VAT number is SE, the 10-digit organisationsnummer and 01 — for example SE556036079301 — and it only exists once the business is registered for VAT. Check an organisationsnummer.
What is the Swedish VAT number format?
SE followed by 12 digits, written without a hyphen, and the last two digits are always 01. Skatteverket’s own format example is SE999999999901.
What is a sole trader’s VAT number?
A sole trader (enskild firma) has no organisationsnummer, so the VAT number is SE, the 10 digits of the owner’s personnummer and 01, written without a hyphen.
How do I check a Swedish VAT number? (Kontrollera momsnummer)
Enter it in the checker on this page: it validates the format, then confirms the number via the EU VIES system and shows the registered name and address. As proof that your buyer was VAT-registered, Skatteverket only accepts a check made directly in the European Commission’s VIES service — see our EU VAT verification guide for that route.
When must the buyer’s VAT number be on the invoice?
A full invoice always shows the seller’s VAT number. The buyer’s VAT number is also required under reverse charge and for exempt sales of goods to another EU country (Mervärdesskattelagen chapter 17, section 24).
Why is a Swedish VAT number invalid on VIES?
Common causes are a missing 01 at the end, a typo that breaks the check digit, or a business that is not (yet) VAT-registered. Since 1 July 2026 Skatteverket can also mark a number invalid in VIES where there is a clear risk of VAT evasion.
