Estonian VAT Number Checker

Check an Estonian käibemaksukohustuslasena registreerimise number (KMKR) for correct format and confirm in real time that it is registered for VAT — with the registered name.

What is an Estonian KMKR number?

The KMKR number (käibemaksukohustuslasena registreerimise number) is Estonia’s VAT registration number, assigned by the Tax and Customs Board (EMTA) when a business registers for VAT: EE followed by 9 digits — for example EE100220641 for Aktsiaselts Tallink Grupp. It is separate from the company’s 8-digit registry code.

Estonian KMKR number format

EE and nine digits; numbers issued so far start with 10.

EE Country code
10 Starts with 10
(so far)
0220641 Seven digits

Example: EE100220641 (Aktsiaselts Tallink Grupp, registry code 10238429).

  • 11 characters: EE + 9 digits, no spaces or letters.
  • Not the registry code: An 8-digit registry code (registrikood) or an 11-digit personal code (isikukood) is a different identifier and will not pass.
  • Check digit: No official formula is published. The placeholder EE123456789 fails.
  • Name: A valid result shows the registered company name — for a VAT group, the group representative.

How to check an Estonian KMKR number

  1. 1 Find the KMKR number on the company’s invoice or website — not the 8-digit registry code shown next to it.
  2. 2 Enter it above, with or without EE. The checker confirms whether the number is registered for VAT.
  3. 3 Compare the returned name with your supplier or customer.
  4. 4 Want to run the official checks yourself? Our EU VAT verification guide walks through them step by step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the format of an Estonian VAT number?

EE followed by 9 digits — for example EE100220641 (Aktsiaselts Tallink Grupp). The numbers issued so far start with 10. Without EE, the 9 digits on their own are the KMKR number.

Is the KMKR number the same as the registry code (registrikood)?

No. The registry code is the 8-digit number every company receives in the e-Business Register — Tallink Grupp’s is 10238429. The KMKR number is a separate 9-digit number that the Tax and Customs Board (EMTA) assigns only when the company registers for VAT.

How do I check an Estonian KMKR number?

Enter it in the checker on this page, with or without EE: it confirms whether the number is registered for VAT and shows the registered name. EMTA keeps the official register of VAT payers; for the official routes, see our EU VAT verification guide.

Why do several Estonian companies share one VAT number?

Companies in a VAT group are registered under one joint VAT number, held by the group representative. In VIES the name of such a number can carry the note “Representative of VAT Group”, and while a company belongs to the group, its own earlier VAT number no longer checks as valid.

Does an Estonian e-Residency company automatically get a VAT number?

No. A company founded through e-Residency gets a registry code, but EMTA states that Estonian businesses are not automatically deemed VAT payers — it has a KMKR number only once it registers for VAT.

Does the KMKR number have a check digit?

Estonia does not publish a check-digit formula for the KMKR number, and the European Commission does not disclose one. The often-used sample EE123456789 is not a valid number.
