What is a Latvian VAT number?
A Latvian VAT number (PVN reģistrācijas numurs) is LV followed by 11 digits. For a company the digits are its registration number from the Register of Enterprises — for example LV40003032949 for Latvenergo AS — and for an individual they are the personal code. It is valid only while the holder is in VID’s VAT register.

- 13 characters: LV + 11 digits, no spaces. Company registration numbers usually start with 4 or 5.
- Same digits: The digits are not a separate VAT number — they are the company’s registration number, or an individual’s personal code.
- Check digit: No check-digit algorithm is officially published. The often-used sample LV12345678901 is not a valid VAT number.
- Name and address: Latvia releases the registered name and address of companies through VIES, so a valid result shows who the number belongs to.

What is the format of a Latvian VAT number?

Is the Latvian VAT number the same as the company registration number?
Yes. For a company, the VAT number is LV plus its 11-digit registration number from the Register of Enterprises, which is also its taxpayer code. It only works as a VAT number once the company is in the State Revenue Service’s (VID) VAT register.

Why does a real Latvian company show as invalid?
The check confirms VAT registration, not whether the company exists. A company in the Register of Enterprises that is not registered for VAT, or has been struck off, shows as invalid.
Can a Latvian VAT number belong to an individual?
Yes. For a VAT-registered individual the 11 digits are their personal code (personas kods). Codes issued before July 2017 contain the date of birth, so treat such numbers as personal data.
What does an “EX” code on a Latvian VAT number mean?
It marks a registration number VID issues to a Latvian small business using the EU small-business VAT exemption in another member state. It is valid only for that exemption, not as an ordinary VAT number.
