Uruguay RUT Format Checker

Check that a Uruguayan RUT (Registro Único Tributario) has the correct 12-digit format.

What is a Uruguayan RUT?

The RUT (Registro Único Tributario) number is Uruguay’s tax identification number for companies and individuals with a business activity, issued by the Dirección General Impositiva (DGI). It has 12 digits — a prefix, a 6-digit number, the block 001 and a check digit — for example 214111700011. New RUTs start with 22.

Uruguayan RUT format

Twelve digits; separators are not part of the number.

001 Fixed block
1 Check digit

Example: 214111700011 (Deremate.com de Uruguay S.R.L. — Mercado Libre, as cited in URSEC Resolution 008/2024).

  • 12 digits: Hyphens, spaces and a pasted UY prefix are removed before checking.
  • Prefix: Before the week of 21 October 2024 it depended on where the taxpayer registered; new RUTs always start with 22.
  • Check digit: The DGI does not publish the algorithm; it classified it as reserved in 2024.
  • Format check only: This checker confirms the 12-digit format. It does not test the check digit or query the DGI.

How to check a Uruguayan RUT

  1. 1 Find the RUT on the supplier’s electronic invoice (CFE) or its RUT registration certificate.
  2. 2 Enter the 12 digits above, with or without separators. The checker confirms the format.
  3. 3 To confirm the supplier is registered, ask for its constancia de inscripción en el RUT or its certificado único (CVA) from the DGI.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many digits does a Uruguayan RUT have?

Twelve, all numbers: a 2-digit prefix, a 6-digit sequential number, the block 001 and a check digit — for example 214111700011 for Deremate.com de Uruguay S.R.L. (Mercado Libre).

Why do new RUTs start with 22?

Since the week of 21 October 2024, the DGI gives every new taxpayer a RUT starting with 22, regardless of the department where it registers. Taxpayers registered earlier kept their numbers, whose first two digits depended on the place of registration.

How is the RUT check digit calculated?

The DGI checks the 12th digit but does not publish how it is calculated: in April 2024 it classified the algorithm as reserved, so that people cannot create numbers that look valid. Our checker confirms the 12-digit format only.

What is the difference between the RUT and the cédula?

Companies and individuals with a business activity get a 12-digit RUT number. Other individuals are identified by their cédula de identidad (7 digits plus a check digit), and foreigners with neither a cédula nor a RUT by a 9-digit NIE.

Is the RUT also the VAT (IVA) number?

Yes. Uruguay has no separate VAT number: the RUT identifies the taxpayer for IVA and appears on electronic invoices (CFE), where the DGI’s technical documents call it the RUC.

Is a Uruguayan RUT the same as a Chilean RUT?

No — only the name is shared. Uruguay’s RUT has 12 digits; Chile’s RUT is a number of up to 8 digits with a check digit from 0 to 9 or K.
