Canada GST/HST Number Checker

Check a Canadian GST/HST number and business name against CRA GST/HST registration records.

What is a GST/HST number?

A GST/HST number is the account a business uses to charge and remit Canada’s Goods and Services Tax or Harmonized Sales Tax: its 9-digit Business Number, the letters RT and a 4-digit reference. Vistaprint Canada Corporation, for example, prints 75761 0928 RT0001 on its GST policy page.

  • Number and name: Enter the business name with the number. The registration is confirmed only for a name that matches CRA records.
  • 9 digits are enough: The checker accepts the 9-digit BN or the full 15-character form; spaces are removed.
  • Check digit: The CRA does not publish one, but every BN we have seen passes the Luhn (mod 10) check, and the CRA rejects numbers that fail it.
  • GST/HST, not VAT: Canada’s value-added tax is called GST/HST, so there is no “VAT number”. Québec’s QST has its own number.

How to check a GST/HST number

  1. 1 Find the GST/HST number on the supplier’s invoice — invoices of $100 or more must show it to support input tax credits.
  2. 2 Enter the number, as 9 digits or with RT0001, and the supplier’s legal, operating or trade name.
  3. 3 The checker confirms the GST/HST registration against CRA records.
  4. 4 Want to use the CRA’s own GST/HST Registry? Our GST/HST verification guide walks through it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check a Canadian GST/HST number? (Comment vérifier un numéro de TPS/TVH?)

Enter the number and the supplier’s business name in the checker on this page: it confirms the GST/HST registration against CRA records. For the CRA’s own GST/HST Registry, see our GST/HST verification guide.

Why do I need the business name?

The CRA confirms a GST/HST registration only for a number and name that belong together. Use the legal, operating or trade name. Case and punctuation do not matter, but the name must otherwise match: “shopify inc” matches Shopify Inc., “Shopify Payments” does not.

What is the GST/HST number format?

The 9-digit Business Number, the letters RT and a 4-digit reference, for example 757610928RT0001. Only the first 9 digits identify the business, and the CRA checks only those.

What do RT0001 and RT9999 mean?

RT is the CRA program identifier for GST/HST, and 0001 is the first GST/HST account of that business. RT9999 marks a registration under the simplified GST/HST regime used by non-resident digital-economy businesses.

When must a supplier show its GST/HST number on an invoice?

For the buyer to claim an input tax credit, documentation for a sale of $100 or more must show the supplier’s GST/HST registration number.

Is a GST/HST number the same as a Business Number?

The GST/HST number is the Business Number’s GST/HST account: the same 9 digits plus RT and a reference. Check a Business Number on its own.
