Hungarian Tax Number Checker
Check a Hungarian adószám or közösségi adószám (EU VAT number) and confirm in real time via the EU VIES system that it is valid — with the registered name and address.
What is a Hungarian adószám?
The adószám is the 11-digit tax number the Hungarian tax authority (NAV) gives businesses and self-employed people, written 12345678-2-41: an 8-digit core number, a VAT-status digit and a 2-digit regional code. Its EU VAT number is HU plus the first 8 digits — for example HU10773381 for Magyar Telekom.
Hungarian adószám format
Eleven digits in three blocks: core number, VAT code and regional code.
(törzsszám)
(e.g. 1, 2, 4, 5)
code
Example: 10773381-2-44 (Magyar Telekom Nyrt.). EU VAT number: HU10773381.
- EU VAT number: HU + the 8-digit core number only. The VAT code and regional code are never part of it.
- VAT code: 1 = not liable to pay VAT (e.g. small-business exemption), 2 = general VAT rules, 4 = VAT group member, 5 = VAT group number. VAT group numbers start with 177.
- Check digit: NAV does not publish a check-digit rule for the adószám; the personal adóazonosító jel has a check digit set in law.
- Name and address: Hungary releases the registered name and address through VIES, so a valid result shows who the number belongs to.
How to check a Hungarian tax number
- 1 Find the adószám or EU VAT number on the company’s invoice or website.
- 2 Enter it above — the full 12345678-2-41 form or HU + 8 digits. The checker confirms the EU VAT number via VIES.
- 3 Compare the returned name and address with your supplier or customer. An invalid result can mean the business is not registered for EU trade.
- 4 Want to run the official checks yourself? Our EU VAT verification guide walks through them step by step.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check a Hungarian tax number? (Hogyan ellenőrizhető egy adószám?)
Enter it in the checker on this page — the full 11-digit adószám or HU plus 8 digits. It checks the EU VAT number in the EU VIES system and shows the registered name and address. For the official routes, see our EU VAT verification guide.
What is the difference between the adószám and the közösségi adószám?
The adószám is the 11-digit Hungarian tax number, written 12345678-2-41. The közösségi adószám (EU VAT number) is HU plus only its first 8 digits — for example HU10773381 for Magyar Telekom (adószám 10773381-2-44) — and NAV issues it on request to taxpayers that buy from, sell to or supply services to businesses in other EU countries.
What does the 9th digit (VAT code) of the adószám mean?
1 means the taxpayer is not liable to pay VAT (for example under the small-business exemption), 2 means it applies the general VAT rules, 4 means it is a member of a VAT group and 5 is the VAT group’s own number. The code can change when the VAT status changes; the first 8 digits do not.
Why does VIES say a Hungarian VAT number is invalid?
VIES checks only the EU VAT number. It shows invalid for a business that has an adószám but is not registered for EU trade, and for a member of a VAT group, whose own EU number is replaced by the group’s.
Do I need the buyer’s tax number on a Hungarian invoice?
For a buyer registered for tax in Hungary, the invoice shows the first 8 digits of its adószám — or of the group number if it belongs to a VAT group (the full adószám when the buyer pays the VAT under reverse charge). A private individual buyer needs no tax number.
What is the difference between the adóazonosító jel and the adószám?
The adóazonosító jel is the 10-digit personal tax identification number of an individual; it starts with 8 and ends in a check digit. The adószám is the 11-digit tax number used by businesses and self-employed people.
