What is a Montenegrin PIB?
The PIB (poreski identifikacioni broj) is Montenegro’s tax identification number, issued by the Tax Administration (Poreska uprava) to companies, branches and self-employed professionals. It has 8 digits: a 7-digit registration serial number and a check digit — for example 02239108 for Crnogorska komercijalna banka AD.

- Leading zero: Keep it: spreadsheets often turn 02239108 into 2239108.
- VAT number: ME + PIB. Enter it with or without ME; the prefix is removed.
- Personal numbers: An individual’s PIB is their personal identification number (JMBG) — personal data, and not covered here.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the PIB the same as the Montenegrin VAT number?
Not exactly. Since 6 February 2026 the VAT (PDV) registration number is the PIB with the prefix ME, so PIB 02239108 is written ME02239108 on VAT documents. Only VAT-registered businesses have one; registration is required above EUR 30,000 of turnover in 12 months.
How is the PIB check digit calculated?
Multiply the first seven digits by 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2, add them up and take the remainder after dividing by 11. The check digit is 11 minus the remainder, written as 0 if the result is 10. A remainder of 0 does not occur in issued PIBs, so the checker rejects it. The 2026 PIB rulebook names a different method (ISO 7064 MOD 11,10), but every PIB in the Tax Administration’s published taxpayer lists follows this one.
Do individuals have a PIB?
Yes. Sole traders, lawyers, notaries and public enforcement officers get an 8-digit PIB. For other individuals, the PIB is the personal identification number (JMBG) issued by the Ministry of Interior, which this checker does not cover.
Who issues the PIB?
The Tax Administration (Poreska uprava), which also keeps the business register (CRPS). A company receives its PIB in its CRPS registration decision.
Is the Montenegro PIB the same as the Serbian PIB?
No. Montenegro’s PIB has 8 digits; Serbia’s has 9, and real Montenegrin PIBs use a different check-digit calculation. Use our Serbia PIB checker for Serbian numbers.
Can I check a Montenegrin VAT number in VIES?
No. Montenegro is not an EU member state, so its VAT numbers are not in the EU’s VIES system.
