What is an Albanian NIPT?
The NIPT, also called the NUIS, is the unique identification number every business in Albania receives when it registers — normally with the National Business Center (QKB). It is used for national and local taxes, including VAT. A NIPT has 10 characters — a letter, eight digits and a check letter — for example J61911005B for Raiffeisen Bank sh.a.

- Input: Upper or lower case, with or without spaces; an AL prefix is removed.
- Issue date: The digits encode when the NIPT was issued, not when the company was founded.
- Check letter: Calculated from the first nine characters; the formula is not officially published.
- Format check only: This checker confirms the letter–eight digits–letter pattern. It does not test the check letter or query the QKB register, so it cannot confirm that a business exists or is registered for VAT.
How to check an Albanian NIPT

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the NIPT the same as the NUIS?
Yes. NIPT and NUIS (Numri Unik i Identifikimit të Subjektit, “unique identification number of the subject”) are two names for the same number; Albanian tax law writes it as “NIPT/NUIS”. Both terms are in current use.
Is the NIPT the Albanian VAT number?
Yes. VAT-registered businesses are identified by the same NUIS, printed on their VAT certificate. Every business has a NIPT, though, so a NIPT on its own does not show that a business is registered for VAT.
What does the first letter of a NIPT mean?
The decade the NIPT was issued: J for the 1990s, K for the 2000s, L for the 2010s and M for the 2020s. The next digit is the year within that decade. It records when the NIPT was issued, not when the business was founded: Raiffeisen Bank, on the register since 1991, has a NIPT beginning J6 (1996).
Can I calculate the NIPT check letter?
The last letter is a check character calculated from the first nine, according to the tax administration, but the formula is not officially published.
Do sole traders have a NIPT?
Yes. A natural person carrying on a business normally registers with the National Business Center (QKB) and receives a NIPT of the same shape as a company’s, separate from their personal ID number (NID). Individuals who are not in business use their personal number for tax.
Do Albanian businesses have to show their NIPT on their website?
Businesses that trade through a website must publish their NIPT on it, together with their name, registered address and phone number. The rule was added to the tax procedures law by Law 79/2025 of 11 December 2025.
