What is a Slovenian VAT number?
A Slovenian VAT number (identifikacijska številka za DDV) is SI followed by the business’s 8-digit tax number (davčna številka) from the Financial Administration (FURS) — for example SI82646716 for Krka, d.d. It only exists once the business is identified for VAT, and the last digit is a mod-11 check digit.

- 10 characters: SI + 8 digits, no spaces or letters.
- Check digit: FURS states it is a mod-11 check digit. The standard method weights the first seven digits 8 down to 2; every number on FURS’s public lists passes it. The sample SI12345678 fails.
- Not a VAT ID: A matična številka from AJPES is a different identifier, and a davčna številka without VAT identification is not valid in VIES.
- Name and address: Slovenia releases the registered name and address through VIES, so a valid result shows who the number belongs to — except for a VAT group, where VIES shows a “VAT group” placeholder instead.

What is the Slovenian VAT number format?

Is the davčna številka the same as the ID za DDV?
The digits are the same, but the VAT ID (SI + davčna številka) only exists once the business is identified for VAT. Having a tax number does not mean a business is in the VAT system.
What is the difference between davčna številka and matična številka?
The davčna številka is the 8-digit tax number issued by the Financial Administration (FURS). The matična številka is the registration number in the AJPES business register — 10 characters, the last three being 000 for the company itself, so companies often print only the first 7, as Krka does with 5043611.
Why does VIES show a Slovenian company as invalid?
Either the company is not identified for VAT — only about half of Slovenian legal entities are — or it belongs to a VAT group and trades under the group’s own SI number.
Do individuals have a davčna številka?
Yes. Every Slovenian resident has an 8-digit tax number. Only people and businesses identified for VAT use it in the SI form as a VAT number.
