Look up an Irish company number in the CRO company register and see the registered name, address, company type and status.
What is an Irish CRO number?
A CRO number (company registration number) is the number the Companies Registration Office gives a company when it registers it — for example 368047 for Google Ireland Limited. It is digits only, must appear on the company’s letters, order forms and website, and is not a tax or VAT number.
CRO company number format
Digits only — no letters, prefix or check digit.
(issued in sequence)
Example: 368047 (Google Ireland Limited, as printed in its terms of service and listed in the CRO register).
- Length: New companies get 6 digits; older companies have fewer (CRH plc is 12965).
- No check digit: Numbers are issued in sequence, so only a register lookup proves one exists.
- Input: Digits only, with or without spaces; a hyphen or a letter is not part of the number. Numbers under four digits can’t be checked here.
- What we return: Registered name and address, company type and CRO status.
- Not a CRO number: The VAT number (IE + 7 digits + 1–2 letters), the Tax Reference Number (7 digits + 1–2 letters) and a CHY charity number.
How to check an Irish CRO number
- 1 Find the number on the company’s letterhead, order form or website, next to its place of registration.
- 2 Enter the digits above. The checker looks the number up in the CRO company register.
- 3 Compare the returned name and address with the company you are dealing with, and check that the status is Normal.
- 4 For the company’s tax number, see the TRN section of our Ireland tax ID guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a CRO number?
It is the number the Companies Registration Office (CRO) gives a company when it registers it (today under the Companies Act 2014). It is digits only, with no letters or prefix; companies registered today get a 6-digit number.
Is the CRO number the same as the VAT or tax number?
No. Revenue gives a company a separate Tax Reference Number, and its VAT number is IE plus that number. Google Ireland Limited, for example, prints “Registration number: 368047/VAT number: IE6388047V”. Check an Irish VAT number.
Where can I find a company’s CRO number?
On its business letters, order forms and website: section 151 of the Companies Act 2014 requires a company to show the number under which it is registered there. It does not have to appear on invoices.
Does a valid CRO number mean the company is trading?
No. Dissolved companies keep their number, and more than half of the numbers in the CRO’s company register belong to dissolved companies. Always read the status: “Normal” means the company is live, while Dissolved, Liquidation or Strike Off Listed mean it is not trading normally. The checker flags dissolved companies.
Do sole traders and business names have a CRO number?
Sole traders and partnerships have no company number. If they trade under a business name, they register that name with the CRO, which gives it a separate business name number; this checker covers company numbers only.
Are Northern Ireland companies on the CRO register?
Not as Irish companies. Northern Ireland companies are registered with Companies House, and their numbers start with NI (or R0 for very old companies). A Northern Ireland company with a branch in Ireland can also appear on the CRO register as an external company. Check a UK company number.
