Frequently Asked Questions
What is the format of a Singapore UEN, and how does it vary by entity type?
Singapore UEN format varies by entity type: Businesses (sole proprietorships/partnerships): 8 digits + 1 letter (e.g. 53342345K); Local companies (registered from 2009): 4-digit year + 5 digits + 1 letter (e.g. 200912345A); Government and other agencies: T/S/R prefix + specific pattern. Entities registered before 2009 retain their old ROC/ROB numbers as "Previous Entity Registration No". [1]
What does "Previous Entity Registration No" mean in the UEN portal results?
Before Singapore's UEN system was introduced in 2009, entities had separate numbers: ROC (companies), ROB (businesses), ROS (societies). When UENs were introduced, old numbers were retained as "Previous Entity Registration No" for backward compatibility. To find the current UEN for a pre-2009 entity, search by the old ROC/ROB number — both the old number and the current UEN identify the same legal entity. [1]
What is the difference between a Singapore UEN and a GST registration number?
The UEN is a universal identifier for all registered entities regardless of GST status. The GST registration number is issued by IRAS specifically to GST-registered businesses (mandatory above SGD 1 million annual taxable turnover). A business has a UEN from registration but only gets a GST number after registering for GST. Tax invoices require the GST number (not just the UEN). Verify GST registration separately via IRAS mytax.iras.gov.sg. [1] [2]
My Singapore supplier's UEN shows "Cancelled" status — can I still transact with them?
No. "Cancelled" means the entity has been deregistered from ACRA — it is no longer a legal entity in Singapore and cannot issue valid invoices or enter binding contracts. For companies, the equivalent status is "Struck Off" or "Liquidated". Any tax invoice from a cancelled-UEN entity after the cancellation date is invalid. Cease transacting and request evidence of their current legal status. [1]
What does the "UEN Issuance Agency" field indicate?
The field identifies which Singapore government agency issued the UEN. Common issuance agencies: ACRA — companies, businesses, LLPs (most commercial entities); ROS (Registry of Societies) — associations; MCCY — charities; MAS — certain licensed financial entities. The issuance agency does not affect the entity's legal status for contracting purposes but indicates the governing regulatory body. [1]
Can I verify a Singapore UEN programmatically using an API?
Yes. ACRA provides a free public API via Singapore's data.gov.sg platform (collections/2301) — RESTful, returns JSON with UEN, entity name, registration date, status, and primary activity. No authentication required for basic queries. ACRA's Bizfile portal offers a paid API for detailed profiles (directors, shareholders, financials). For GST validation, use the IRAS GST-registered businesses dataset on data.gov.sg. [1]
What is the current Singapore GST rate and registration threshold?
Singapore's GST rate was raised from 8% to 9% on 1 January 2024 (second step of the phased increase from 7%). The mandatory registration threshold remains SGD 1 million annual taxable turnover. For overseas digital service providers supplying B2C in Singapore: mandatory registration if Singapore supply exceeds SGD 100,000 and global turnover exceeds SGD 1 million (since 2020). Low-value goods (under SGD 400) imported online are also subject to GST since 1 January 2023. [1]
