DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad) search option is available for free on the Argentina RENAPER website. RENAPER (Registro Nacional de las Personas) is Argentina's national civil registry and identity document issuing authority website. You can access the DNI search here. This search requires you to add the date of birth and the sex for successful DNI validation.

What is the difference between DNI, CUIL, and CUIT in Argentina — and which one do I need for employment and invoicing?​

DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad) is the national identity document number — it identifies an individual but is not a tax number. CUIL (Código Único de Identificación Laboral) is the labor identification code used for employment registration with ANSES (social security); it is derived from the DNI by adding a prefix (20 for male, 27 for female, 23 in rare cases) and a check digit. CUIT (Código Único de Identificación Tributaria) is the tax identification number required for issuing invoices, paying taxes, and registering for IVA — it uses the same format as CUIL. The RENAPER portal only returns Status and Date of Issue — why can't I see the holder's name or full details?​

The public RENAPER portal intentionally limits the information returned to protect personal data. Argentina's Law 25.326 (Ley de Protección de Datos Personales) restricts public disclosure of personal information. The portal confirms whether a DNI is active and genuine, and shows its issue date, but does not display personal identifying details. Can foreign nationals living in Argentina get a DNI, or do they use a different identifier for tax purposes?​

Foreign nationals who obtain temporary or permanent residency in Argentina are issued a DNI by RENAPER — in the same format as a citizen's. Foreigners without residency do not receive a DNI. For tax purposes, non-resident foreigners needing to operate economically in Argentina are assigned a CDI (Clave de Identificación) by AFIP — a simplified identifier for those who cannot obtain a CUIT. The DNI format shows dots (e.g. 17.286.695) in some places and no dots in others — what is the correct format?​

Both are valid. The traditional display format uses dots as thousands separators (17.286.695), while systems process the raw numeric form without dots (17286695). For developer integrations, store the DNI as a pure numeric string of 7 or 8 digits (older DNIs may be 7 digits; most current ones are 8 digits). The CUIL/CUIT derived from the DNI uses the raw 8-digit form without dots. The RENAPER portal accepts both formats.

My Argentine employee's payroll system is rejecting their CUIL — how do I calculate the correct CUIL from a DNI?​

CUIL format: [prefix]-[8-digit DNI]-[check digit]. The prefix is 20 for male, 27 for female, or 23 when both would produce the same check digit. The check digit uses modulus-11: multiply the 10-digit sequence (prefix digits + DNI) by weights [5, 4, 3, 2, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2], sum the products, compute remainder when divided by 11, subtract from 11 (if result is 11, digit is 0; if 10, use prefix 23 and recalculate). Does Argentina's digital DNI (DNI Digital) have the same verification process as the physical card?​

Yes. The digital DNI available through the Mi Argentina app stores the same DNI number as the physical card and can be verified through the same RENAPER portal.
