Clave Única de Identificación Tributaria (CUIT)

"Clave Única de Identificación Tributaria" (CUIT) is a unique identification number for tax purposes in Argentina. It is often referred to as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) or Tax ID. The CUIT is used to identify individuals, businesses, and entities for tax-related matters.

Individuals and businesses obtain their CUIT through the Administración Federal de Ingresos Públicos (AFIP), which is the tax authority in Argentina. Upon registration, a CUIT is granted by AFIP; thus, he/she acquires a tax identity vis a vis third parties, and is therefore entitled to develop its activities on a legal basis.

CUIT Format

11-digit number formatted as NN-NNNNNNNN-N (the first 2 digits indicate the type of person: 20 for men; 27 for women; 23, 24, 25 or 26 for both (in case there is an identical CUIT), and 30 or 33 for legal persons, the next 8 digits are: in the case of individuals, the ID (DNI) number; and in case of legal persons, it is assigned by the AFIP, the last digit is randomly assigned)

Where to find CUIT?

Once the CUIT has been assigned, persons become part of the taxpayers’ register of the Federal Administration.Any person may enter the AFIP’s website and see the Proofs of Registration (General Regime) or Registration of Monotributo (Simplified Tax Regime for Small Taxpayers) of any of the registered taxpayers, thus having access to the information regarding their tax status.

Clave Única de Identificación Laboral (CUIL)

"Clave Única de Identificación Laboral" (CUIL) is an identification number used in Argentina for labor and social security purposes. It is assigned to individuals for the purpose of tracking their employment and social security contributions.

Identification Code (CDI)

The Identification Code - CDI - represents a numeric code that the AFIP issues to individuals who are not required to have a CUIT or CUIL (see below) due to the fact that there is no tax or social security reason to have one but otherwise is required to be identified for certain procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between CUIT and CUIL?

CUIT (Clave Única de Identificación Tributaria) is a unique tax identification number for businesses, self-employed workers, and freelancers. It is issued by AFIP. CUIL (Código Único de Identificación Laboral), on the other hand, is for employees to track social security contributions and is issued by ANSES. If you have a CUIT, you do not need to process a CUIL. [1]

How can I verify if an Argentina CUIT is valid?

You can verify the status of a CUIT using the official AFIP "Constancia de Inscripción" tool. By entering the 11-digit number, you can confirm if the entity is active and view its registered taxes. [2]

Do foreign digital service providers need a CUIT?

Generally, no. Since 2018, VAT (IVA) on digital services supplied by foreign residents to Argentine end-consumers (B2C) is collected via a "perception" mechanism. The VAT is withheld by the financial intermediary (e.g., credit card issuer) at the time of payment, so the foreign provider typically does not need to register with AFIP. [3]

What is the CDI?

The CDI (Clave de Identificación) is an identification code for individuals or entities who need to perform specific procedures (like opening a bank account or buying property) but do not have a tax or labor obligation requiring a CUIT or CUIL.

Why is my CUIT blocked or inactive?

A CUIT may be blocked due to missing tax filings (affidavits), inconsistent address data, or expired "Clave Fiscal" security levels. It is often required to visit an AFIP office or update data online with a high-level security key to reactivate it.
